BIO: JAI

Jalaini Abu Hassan or “Jai” was born in Selangor, Malaysia in 1963,but spent most of his childhood in Taiping. He found his artisticvocation early in life, around the age of seven, and to this day hiswork carries a sense of immediacy, a love of shapes and familiarobjects engendered
in those childhood years.
In 1985 he took his BA in Fine Art at MARA Institute of Technology, and was awarded a Malaysian Federal Scholarship to continue hisstudies in the UK. In 1988, he gained his MA from the prestigiousSlade School in London. Awarded a MARA Scholarship to study in theUSA, he then took his Master of Fine Art degree at New York's famousPratt Institute, graduating in 1994.
Jai's career as an artist has been on the rise ever since. Thecombination of an innate sense of the local with a mature, powerfulgrasp of composition and painting technique has made him a leader inMalaysia's contemporary art scene, heralded by critics, collectors, and fellow artists alike.
Jai's work has essentially revolved around objects - as symbols, asforms, as keys to personal memory, as artefacts of daily lifeyesterday and today. In the grand tradition of the still life genre inpainting, the artist is constantly stretching the visual possibilitiesof his subject. While early charcoal works focussed on monumentalnatural forms, his painting since has been concerned with relatingeveryday objects, or objects from memory to each other in an open narrative.
Jai has exhibited in Malaysia, Singapore, America and the UK and alsoin Spain and Iraq. His works are in the collection of the National ArtGallery in Malaysia and in private, corporate and gallery collectionsaround the world. The artist is currently teaching at UiTM.
